Going out for a ride on a winter day

THINGS TO DO IN THE NEW YEAR

Each year I become tired of hearing about New Year’s resolutions. The media fixates on things people should do because of this marking of a new 365-day cycle. Companies capitalize on areas where people will likely spend money with these short-lived ‘resolutions’. It’s a calculated marketing campaign that I wish people would see for what it is: unrealistic and counter-productive.

Instead, I’ve created a list of ways to improve. Not because it’s a new year, but because each day is a chance to do things better.

1) Make every day a new year!

2) Go skating on a lake- on whatever skates you may have- and remember what it’s like to be a kid again!

3) At night, go outside for a minute and look up at the sky (preferably on a clear day) and gaze into the beauty of the stars and the moon. Even in a city, this is a magical experience.

4) Ask your partner or the person closest to you what their dream is and help them fulfill it. Encourage them to follow it. Enjoy it with them, even if it has nothing to do with you.

5) Go for a bike ride in the middle of the winter. Bundle up and just get outside. It’s fun!!

6) Teach a friend a skill- whether it’s skating or guitar, it is a gift to share the special things you are capable of doing.

7) Tell someone you love them each and everyday.

8) Believe in yourself and go and do what you’ve always dreamed of doing.

9) When you feel like calling a friend or a family member, pick up the phone and call without thinking further. They just might need to hear your voice.

10) Last but not least, watch multiple episodes of Prison Break!
