RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS AT THE LEMONADE STAND

Clara Hughes, Friday, July 6, 2007

Calgary, Alberta

While riding home from training today- totally exhaused- I stopped at this lemonade stand to tell the girls I was sorry that I didn’t have any money on my to buy a glass (I had seen them on my way to training a few hours before and felt bad that I didn’t support their business!). They said “that’s okay, do you want a free glass?”

And so there I was, enjoying my nice cool glass of lemonade, chatting with Kirsten and Reagan, feeling on top of the world after not only witnessing but receiving such kindness from two young people. I decided to pedal home and return with some change to drop in the cup.

Upon returning, I met their father, and thanked the girls for the lemonade. He said “they said you looked tired”.

That such kindness still exists in the world, in such a spontanious way from two young girls, gives me hope that humanity just might be okay. This also made me think about June Callwood’s last interview with George Strombolopolous (is that how you spell it?) from ‘The Hour’ on CBC TV, and how she talked about the importance of kindness. How when a person opens a door for a stranger, even if the person doesn’t notice the act of kindness, that energy is put out into the world and has a positive effect on the human condition.

Well, for me today, Reagan and Kristen made that random act of kindness, and I noticed, and I thank them for it!

**I strongly recommend watching the interview with June Callwood; The Hour
