HOME BREW ADVANTAGE

Richmond, BC

There are many advantages to a home Olympics. I am sitting in one of them at the moment. Renting an apartment for the last year and a half a scant 500m or so from the Olympic Oval in Richmond has its advantages. Sleeping in my own bed, cooking my own food, and relaxing with my husband Peter, not to mention being so close to the oval, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Or does it?

Anyone who knows me has listened to me talk endlessly about my love for coffee. Good coffee. Espresso, americano, cappuchino… I love it all. Which brings me to my personal favorite on the topic of home field advantage: my espresso machine. Nothing makes me more happy than waking up to a perfectly brewed shot of espresso coffee. After discovering my massage therapist Shayne Hutchins was driving to Vancouver last week, I asked the special favor that he bring with him my Saeco machine. I even went as far to bring a pound of my preferred beans from Caffe Beano in Calgary.

Waking up this morning, I was giddy drawing that first espresso. So happy that I had to return immediately for another. I stopped at two americanos in fear of the dreaded caffeine-induced anxious feeling that results in too much on an empty stomach. No, I had not eaten yet. Yes, I do this to myself every day. There is something that I like about the feeling of caffeine on an empty stomach.

If anyone wonders what I will be doing on race days, upon waking, I’ll be turning the espresso machine on with eyes half closed, brewing my race day rocket fuel. Just like at home.

Home sweet home Olympics.

On another note, when leaving the oval today to walk home, I saw the cutest little Canadian sports fan on River Road. This little guy was getting his photo taken by his Mom. I had to ask for a shot with him. I think this may end up being my favorite photo of the Games.
