ARTIST’S STATEMENT

As a figurative oil painter with a strong interest in the human condition, my work seeks to explore the various aspects of solitude. Currently I am working on a series, Seven Points of Solitudes in which I explore solitude and its place within the human condition.

The impetus for my work has been observing the solitary responses of family and friends’ personal experiences of longing, waiting, tolerance and acceptance. Articulating these experiences, this series questions our understanding of solitude and explores the iconography of objects and place in moments of solitude.

Beyond the subject matter, my hermitic habits and time consuming painting process brings with them a daily communion with solitude and in intimate contact with both the negative and positive realities of time spent alone. This personnel investment of time and energy continually expands my understanding of the universal yet intimate nature of solitude. My work in no way sets out to ‘answer’ questions. It attempts to bring forth questions, of myself and the audience, as we explore what it is to be human.
